October, 2006

Do I start explaining why I haven’t posted anything since April, or do I just jump in? I think I’ll just jump in, because at the end it doesn’t matter why I haven’t written an LA-update in 5 months, fact is: I haven’t.

So here we are, it’s actually Fall in LA…and I’m LOVING it!! We’re finding ourselves in one of those rare weeks here, where it actually looks like Fall. It doesn’t quite feel like the Fall seasons I was used to back in Europe, but this is as much Fall as LA will ever get, I think: anywhere between the 65-80 F (18-26 C) during the day to cool at night. The trees on our street are losing their leaves and we even had our first rain last week!!! (That was the first real rain since, let me think….April I guess.)

Gosh, what has happened this summer? Let’s see… In May we did indeed get our motorcycle license. Only 8 more weeks (as I’m writing this) and we’ll be off to the “Land Downunder”. We’re so excited about it and…so much still needs to happen before we can even start to think about packing our bags.

As you may know, David had his big birthday this year: we celebrated the 2nd anniversary of his 39th (hihi) with a great surprise party which he did not see coming. On top of that I treated him to a 2 day trip to Vegas, where we had a chance to see Cirque du Soleil’s “O”, a magnificent show for which we’d received complimentary tickets from one of my friends and tennis clients.

Oh my, I almost forgot (he’s become such a part of our family that it feels like we’ve had him forever): in June, we adopted Boomer, a brother for Buster. He’s an Australian Shepherd as well. He’s a Blue Merle. For those to whom that doesn’t mean anything: he’s got the white, tan and grey colors and has 1 bright blue and one blue-brown eye. He was around 8 weeks when we adopted him and he’s growing like there’s no tomorrow. If you click on the following link, you’ll be able to see some pics of him: Boomer Pics. He’s absolutely adorable and Buster loves his new brother to pieces. Chaplin has come to terms with “another thing” in her house and is back to being all loving and affectionate again.

David has been one busy bee lately: several weeks ago he opened a live show at the Santa Monica Playhouse with his friend, writing & comedy partner Tom. They’ve got 2 more weekends of show to go as they close on October 29. In addition, they’ve been very busy with the development of their mobile phone content, their podcasts and online ventures. Over the past couple of weeks, David has been busy commercially as well: at the beginning of the month, he booked a national (and international I believe) commercial for Visa, which he spent an entire week working on. This week he filmed a national Hertz commercial, so you can imagine, we’re very happy with that.

I’m in the middle of the Fall semester. I’m teaching 3 classes this semester, which means: 6 days / week. Monday – Friday are extremely early days when I get up at 5 am, as classes start as early as 6:45. The good thing is that it gets me back home early in the morning, with the rest of the day in front of me. Saturday's class goes from 9-12:30. My tennis coaching is going well. I’ve got several regular clients and am very much enjoying it, especially as we can see great improvement in their game.

And then there is the home remodel: we started construction on August 29. It’s going well. We had a couple of set-backs in the beginning when we found out that one of the existing walls of the house (of our current bedroom) had completed rotted away as a result of water leaking in the wall from the ugly turquoise awning that was attached to it and had been hanging over the patio probably since the house was built in 1951!! Then there was the incident where Boomer had decided to entertain himself by chewing (and puncturing) a plastic bottle of motor oil on the newly poured concrete which is going to be our finished floor… Out of all the places where he could have laid down to do that, he (of course) picked the one spot where there would be no furniture: the area that you would see upon entering the bedroom!!!! Go figure… But, that’s all behind us now and we’re making progress. I’m keeping a “photo diary” where you can see the changes over time: Remodel '06

That’s all in a nutshell. If I’ve forgotten anything, I’ll include that in my next post. Hopefully until soon!!

Love from the 5 of us,

The Beelers

April, 2006

April was pretty much characterized by our bathroom renovation. (Oh, sexy!) What we thought would cost us a long weekend, ended up taking 2 1/2 weeks. In addition to unexpected surprises when we opened up walls, I do admit it was also a slight miscalculation on our part…oops…, BUT on the bright side: we learned a lot and now have an amazing new bathroom (see photos). The vanity still needs to be built, but the big and heavy work is behind us.

We’re extremely excited about our upcoming trip and are researching, reading and watching DVD’s on both Australia & New Zealand to familiarize ourselves with some of what awaits us. In addition, we have decided to explore New Zealand by motorcycle – yes, we’re getting our license. Our classes are scheduled in May, so hopefully, we’ll be able to share in the next letter that we indeed passed

We’re so incredibly excited about the prospect of learning all these new things in anticipation of our trip. In addition, we’re also planning on becoming certified scuba divers, so we can scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef. And then of course, the preparations in order to travel light…how’s that for a challenge (understatement of the year)...

As I’m writing this letter, I’m enjoying the last weekend of Spring Break. Teaching starts again this upcoming week. I’m really enjoying it, my classes are great, it’s a joy to be working with them. Tennis practice is going well as well. I look forward to building my practice over the summer, it’s great to be back on the courts again.

David’s busy with writing and exploring new comedic business ventures with his writing, acting, and laughing partner Tom. By the end of the month they’ll have video podcasts of their work available on iTunes, DVD’s of their work for sale on their website and they’re exploring the possibility to broadcast their work on cell phones. It’s amazing where technology has taken us over the past couple of years. 5 years ago, we would have never thought of watching video on our cell phones while waiting in line at the grocery store.

I believe that this is pretty much a complete update for this month. I’ll be back in May with more and exciting news.

Love from the four of us,

The Beelers.

March, 2006

Oops, how did we get from 2004 to 2006?? I realize that it's been way too long since I've done this and many of you have already asked us for updates on life, the house, etc. and I haven't done it. I really want to use the excuse of "we've been so busy" and I know that it just wouldn't fly. I mean, isn't everyone? Anyways, truth is that we have been incredibly busy, no moss on the Beelers' rolling stone here in LA.

2005 was amazing and went by in a flash. We continued working on the house (as you can see on the photos). In February, Marieke's folks visited for a month, we had a wonderful time. In June the Beeler family expanded with the adoption of Buster, our Australian Shepherd. He was Marieke's birthday present and is a wonderful and adorable addition. Chaplin even has come to accept him. (Yes, miracles DO happen.) Over the summer, we had an exchange student stay with us from Spain. Babiche wanted to improve her English and learn more about life in LA. She got what she wanted: Yostemite National Park, Potluck dinner party, Dodgers Baseball Game, Venice Beach, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica AND Las Vegas!! (Just to mention a few)

In the fall we re-financed our house, in anticipation of a big remodel that we have planned for this year. We'll be adding a Master Suite to the back of the house: master bedroom, bathroom and (Marieke's) walk-in closet.

2006 is bringing so many more changes: I (Marieke) have started a part-time teaching position at Glendale College in Speech 101 (Public Speaking). In addition, I've picked up tennis again! Instead of playing competitively, I now train and coach, it's so much fun, I'm really enjoying it.

And then the big news: we're going Downunder. We just booked our trip for the Holidays. We'll be going away for a month: starting out with Australia (Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock & Sydney), followed by New Zealand (driving and covering both islands) and Fiji to relax and indulge. I call it our 2nd Honeymoon, David calls it "the last hurrah" before we start with a family. But for those of you who know Marieke a bit, you'll know that children will not keep the traveling bug away, this is definately not our last trip, I can tell you that much.

Workwise, things are going well as well. David's Tostitos commercial is still playing a lot (for those of you who haven't seen it already, it also plays online: http://www.tostitos.com/promotions.php
Click on the green button "Play" next to the little photo that says "Window", give it a second to load and it'll start playing.

Furthermore, Beeler Greetings is moving forward as well. We're in the process of getting reps, to help us get our cards "out there". The feedback we get is good and inspiring, we look forward to what 2006 will bring us in that respect.

Finally, David is spending time with his different writing partners writing scripts, and short comedy. New developments, which may lead to fun and exciting projects later this year.

Well, that's all for now. I hardly dare to promise, but I will try my best to keep this writing up on a monthly basis.

Love from the four of us,

The Beelers.
