BOOTH
TRILOGY
Part
I - Booth
Edwin Booth was the most successful actor of his day...
until his brother assassinated the President....
In the wake of Lincoln's assassination an angry country
wanted retribution. BOOTH is set in New York on January
3, 1866, nine months after the assassination, as Edwin Booth
prepares to return to the stage. Knowing too well that his
name is inextricably linked with his brother, John Wilkes
Booth, and hence his brother's infamous crime, he fears
the worst from a hostile audience. A fascinating insight
into life in the public eye, an individual grappling with
the wheels of history and fate, and American theatre at
the time of The Civil War.
"Beeler, quite superb...keeps you on the edge of your
seat." "...impressively detailed...fascinating..."
— The Scotsman —The Evening News, Edinburgh
Part
II - Our Brutus
When obsession is fatal...
When one death threatens a country...
When a president pays the price...
John Wilkes Booth was a successful actor, earning over $20,000
per year, but he is most remembered as Lincoln's assassin.
He had fame, adulation, and was the toast of society. Why
then, did he do it? Told with passion and dark humour, OUR
BRUTUS follows John Wilke's obsession, the conspiracy, the
assassination, and Booth's demise as his ultimate solution
backfires. It is the story of those who survived a Civil
War but could not endure the peace.
"...Beeler, a masterful performance... a uniformly
strong cast....a tight, imaginatively directed play (and)
worthy successor to the 1991 Fringe First for BOOTH."
—The Scotsman
"...compelling...witty, richly crafted....the nine
strong cast fills a colourful canvas......a truly ripping
yarn."
--–– The Independent
Part
III - The Sanity of Madness
He had that "touch of strangeness that
gave him genius"...
He was one step away from the top...
Then he fell in love.
Junius Brutus Booth, father to Edwin and John Wilkes, was
considered to be one of the greatest actors of his day —
a swaggering drunk, an eccentric prone to fits of madness,
and the only real rival to the great Edmund Kean. On the
cusp of achieving his goals and toppling "the Lion
of the London stage", he meets a flower girl who rocks
his world. A glorious love story spanning two continents,
The Sanity of Madness follows Junius as he balances his
two families, his two careers as pre-eminent tragedian and
gentleman farmer, and the demonic and angelic contradictions
of his nature. If Edwin inherited his father's genius, then
John Wilkes Booth inherited his father's star quality and
his dark, conflicting, passionate soul. This is the story
of a man searching for that which we all crave, carving
solutions from the granite of his experience, touched by
the potent simplicity of love....
